The licensing system of Microsoft
Simultaneously with the release of Windows Server 2012 R2 and other software editions for servers, Microsoft has updated its licensing model. Depending on the edition, Microsoft now distinguishes between licensing by cores, which does not require additional access licenses, and licensing by server plus a company-specific number of client access licenses (CALs). This is calculated from the sum of the users or end devices (PC, laptop, etc.) that are to be authorized to access the server. There is therefore a choice between licensing a single person or a single device - called User CAL or Device CAL.
Licensing with CALs is not available for every server edition, usually devices or users can be equipped with client access licenses for the respective Standard depending on the server software type (in addition to the other option of core-based licensing).
The background of this Microsoft licensing model is the differing scalability of the individual server editions. This means that the different requirements of companies and organizations with regard to the performance of a server software as well as the scope of the functions and features used are mapped.
The variant of rights assignment with access-based CALs explained here is the more favourable solution for small and medium-sized companies - provided they only use the standard or basic functions of a server version - than licensing according to cores, in which the computing power of the machines used in a company is used as the basis for calculating the licence costs.
User and Device CALs for the Windows Server Editions 2012 and 2012 R2 can be purchased at a low price from Wiresoft
In order to legally use the respective functions and services of a Windows Server 2012 or Server 2012 R2 Edition (the standard or datacenter edition Server 2012 R2 is available from Wiresoft), an appropriate number of Client Access Licenses must be purchased. This is because the Microsoft licensing model separates the license for the implementation of a server software from the license for its use by a user or end device. Thus, every user of a company or organization who wants to access the functions of a Windows server software from the 2012 and 2012 R2 editions onwards requires a Client Access License.
A CAL is always a single license, which only allows the user or end device equipped with it to access the licensed Windows Server version. This prevents other devices or users who do not have a corresponding CAL from gaining access to the server services and data. This enables companies to protect their sensitive data from unauthorized employees or strangers. The client access license therefore also offers higher security.
Differences between User CALs and Device CALs for Windows Server 2016 / 2016 R2
Microsoft's license model differentiates between user-based CALs and device-based CALs. This differentiation between a device license and a user license has the advantage of a flexible and at the same time need-based assignment of rights in a company. Once an access license has been assigned to a specific user or terminal device, it cannot be transferred to another user or terminal device. It is also impossible to license a device with a user CAL, or vice versa. On the other hand, both types of license can be combined for access to the Windows in a company.
At Wiresoft you will find both Client Access licenses for the server version 2012 R2, which is also available at a reasonable price: both as user-related and as device-related single licenses. The decision for the preferred license variant can be influenced by the factors described below.
User CAL for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
One (1) User CAL for Windows Server 2012 / R2 grants only one (1) user access to the server functions. The user client access license is not bound to exactly one device, but the licensed user can alternately access the server with different devices.
User CAL thus offers the advantage of flexible access to the server from very different locations - stationary or mobile: either from any PC at the workstation in the company OR from any mobile device (e.g. laptop or tablet) - at the workstation, in the home office or at another location that is Windows. With a User CAL, a location-independent use of the Windows Server 2012 versions is thus possible.
Device CAL for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2
A Device CAL for Windows servers, on the other hand, represents a purely device-related access authorization. Instead of one person, it only provides one (1) terminal device with access rights for the Windows server. Again, the type of device does not matter as long as it is Windows: With every PC OR laptop or tablet that has been granted access rights via Device CAL, the functions of Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 can be used. It does not matter whether the end device used is used locally, in a company or mobile. Every employee who has access to it can thus automatically access the licensed server with the Device CAL. This is particularly advantageous when several users share a device.
Choosing between a Device CAL or User CAL
Thus, when purchasing client access licenses, the decision for a license type - Device CAL or User CAL - depends on the predominant type of use of server services in a company in order to save costs in licensing.
If the majority of employees use the Windows Server services locally from their company workstation, for example on a project-related basis or in shift work, it is cheaper to equip them with Device CALs.
If, on the other hand, employees access the server from different end devices - not only stationary, but also mobile, at the company location, on the road and in the home office - then equipping the server with User CALs is also more advantageous in terms of price.
The combination of Device CALs and User CALs for Windows Server may also be the most beneficial. Because, as already mentioned, the CAL form cannot be changed.
